Discover Frederick's Bistro

If you’ve ever driven past 14439 NW Military Hwy #100, San Antonio, TX 78231, United States and wondered whether it’s worth pulling into the parking lot, let me save you the suspense: Frederick's Bistro is one of those places that quietly earns loyalty. I’ve dined here several times over the past year-once for a relaxed date night, another time for a small business dinner-and each visit confirmed why it has such steady local reviews.

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels polished but not pretentious. White tablecloths, soft lighting, and attentive servers create a European-style dining room vibe. Yet the energy is warm and approachable. The staff doesn’t rush you through the menu; instead, they explain the dishes in detail, often sharing how certain sauces are prepared or which wine pairs best with a particular entrée. That kind of service reflects real hospitality training, something the National Restaurant Association often highlights as a key factor in repeat dining experiences.

The menu leans heavily into French and Central European influences. You’ll find classics like duck, veal, and fresh seafood, alongside seasonal specials that showcase thoughtful technique. During one visit, I ordered the beef tenderloin with a rich reduction sauce. The meat arrived perfectly medium-rare-juicy, tender, and deeply flavorful. According to USDA guidelines, proper temperature control is essential not only for safety but also for texture, and it’s clear the kitchen here understands that balance.

Another standout is their seafood selection. The grilled salmon I tried had a crisp exterior and buttery interior, finished with a delicate herb sauce. The plating wasn’t overly flashy, but it was precise. That restraint actually signals confidence in the cooking. As culinary experts often point out, when ingredients are high quality, you don’t need to overcomplicate them. Frederick’s approach seems to follow that philosophy closely.

Let’s talk appetizers for a moment. Their escargot is a favorite among regulars, and I can see why. Served bubbling hot in garlic herb butter, it’s paired with crusty bread that soaks up every last drop. On a different evening, I shared a house salad featuring crisp greens and a balanced vinaigrette-simple, but executed well. Consistency like this is what separates an average diner from a respected neighborhood bistro.

Wine lovers will appreciate the curated list. While it’s not enormous, it’s carefully selected to complement the menu. I once asked the server for a pairing recommendation with veal, and the suggested red blend elevated the dish beautifully. Studies published in hospitality journals show that thoughtful wine pairings significantly enhance guest satisfaction, and this restaurant seems to understand that dynamic well.

What also stands out in many customer reviews is the pace of the meal. Courses arrive with timing that feels intentional. You’re given space to enjoy conversation, yet you’re never left waiting awkwardly. In my experience, the service team strikes that balance consistently. That level of coordination between kitchen and front-of-house staff reflects strong management and operational discipline.

Location-wise, being in North San Antonio makes it convenient for residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. Parking is straightforward, and the setting feels removed from the busier downtown restaurant scene. For those who value a quieter dining environment, that’s a real advantage.

Of course, pricing aligns with the upscale ambiance. This isn’t a quick lunch stop; it’s more suited for celebrations, anniversaries, or business meetings. Still, portion sizes are fair, and the ingredient quality justifies the cost. Transparency in pricing and menu descriptions also builds trust-you know what you’re ordering and why it’s priced that way.

While menus can evolve seasonally, and availability may vary, the core experience has remained consistent across my visits: refined European-inspired cuisine, attentive service, and a calm, elegant setting. In a city filled with Tex-Mex, barbecue joints, and casual eateries, Frederick’s Bistro carves out a distinct identity as a destination for classic continental dining done right.

  • Frederick's Bistro Celebrating International Women’s Day With their Wine is the Star and so are You! Wine Pairing Event Cecilia Barretto was our brilliant “Wine Educator.” With each course: -we received a tip on how to get the best “taste” out of our wine selection, to include anatomy to help us understand the whole picture, - we would get a slide explaining the pairing and the name of the wine, vineyard and its location, - and then a brief history of the vineyard’s connection to women! Truly the best wine tasting we’ve ever attended! The entire event was so well organized, as you’d expect nothing less from this restaurant and its superb staff and gracious hosts, and the food…always leaves me wanting more! This place and these restauranteaurs are always so inventive and creative in their planning of these events! They truly want to give their clients the best possible experience and because they care - the outcomes are always outstanding! Thank you, Teresita DC de Costa and Frederick Costa and Staff for a stellar Birthday evening! Cannot wait to see what you two come up with next! With gratitude, Tinker Mass Schultz

  • Love the happy hour specials at Frederick's, great martini and wine prices as well as their excellent dishes. The dessert trio is a great ending to a fabulous meal. And get the fries, you won't regret it!

  • Food was really good the Calamari was soooo good the soups are amazing and the wine is always a nice go to. I love how attentive they were just were a few minor things I took points off for but mainly because it's personal reasons not necessarily the bistro itself. I will continue to drop in when I can because I'm always in for a treat.

  • This place is amazing. We took my mom there for her 82nd birthday. It's one of her favorite restaurants. The beef tenderloin was cooked to perfection and the service was top notch. It is a little pricey, so it's a special occasion place. But you get what you pay for. It's quaint and small, so you get a personal feel. It's relatively quite so it's perfect for anniversaries or any other couple related occasions. It has a separate quite bar if you prefer.

  • We had been for happy hour and decided to try dinner. We were not disappointed as the atmosphere is great and so is the service. The food was good especially for the price. The wedge salad could have had better bleu cheese dressing and fresher lettuce for $11, but was a good portion. The mussels were excellent. The entrees were slightly overcooked but still had good flavor. The overall experience was excellent and we will definitely be back to try other dishes.

  • This is a beautiful restaurant and is frequented by a lot of regulars. This was my first time here so we had a bit of a hiccup at the beginning of our service. I had a reservation for 3 but one of my friends was running a few minutes late. We were immediately welcomed when we walked in and seated. The food was pretty good but could have used a little salt on the osso bucco and au gratin potatoes. The crab cake had a good amount of crab and a minimum amount of fillers. I didn't particularly care for the Ceasar salad because the dressing was overly fishy. The serving sizes are adequate. I hear they have a great happy hour so maybe I need to try that.

  • We tried Fredrricks Bistro during Culinaria restaurant week on Jan 2025. First time there and it was excellent. We came out with full bellies as the portions were generous and delicious. Our server was friendly and the atmosphere was pleasant and lively. The desserts were to die for! We will be back again!
